• 4 May: Peter Minuit arrives in New Netherland. As first governer of the fledging colony, one of his first actions will be to purchase Manhattan from the native population with local goods.
• 23 September: The first cargo ship to leave Manhattan, the The Arms of Amsterdam, leaves with a manifest that includes over 7,200 beaver pelts.
• The first slaves in the New World arrive during this year in New Netherland.
