Adriaen Block
From New York
Adriaen Block (1567-1627) was a Dutch explorer and fur trader who visited Manhattan in the early 17th century. He sailed up the East River as far as Long Island Sound before his ship, the Tyger, was destroyed in a fire. Fortunately for he and his crew, the Lenape tribe helped him build a new ship, dubbed the Onrust.
Later that year, he assisted Hendrick Christiaensen in creating the first map showing both Manhattan and Long Island as seperate entities.
